Thanks for Sharing, Congress!

My new Library of Congress card!

Just a quick update from the weekend! (I know, I know, I haven't posted in over a week - that inconsistency will change, I promise)

After a tour of the incredible building with some friends, I got a card for the Library of Congress! If you live or work in D.C. in some kind of research capacity, it is very easy to get an official card as a "reader." That means that I can actually access any of the millions of books that are housed in its buildings here in D.C.

Cannot contain my excitement for this perk of living in the capitol city. Amazing how legitimate a piece of plastic can make you feel.

My inner nerd is probably showing right now, but I definitely plan to check out resources about aftercare provision for victims of sexual violence while I'm here for the summer. I will be sure to share what I find with all of you!

Also, if any of you are ever in D.C., you should definitely get a free tour of the Library - it's one of my favorites tourist stops here in the city.

Welcome!

The word "fellowship" has two important meanings for me. First, it refers to when someone is supported by an academic institution to pursue a period of research and learning. This is certainly one part of what the next year will be like for me.

I have received a selective award from Vanderbilt University called the Keegan Traveling Fellowship, which will allow me to spend the next year on six different continents, in over fifteen countries. I will use this opportunity to visit and volunteer with aftercare facilities around the world for women who have been rescued from the sex trafficking trade or from situations of gender-based violence.

Certainly, I couldn't be more grateful for this incredible opportunity. However, this blog serves, to me, as a representation of a more significant meaning of the word fellowship: a group of individuals who share an important interest. I believe that the solution to gender-based violence begins with awareness - everyone should share an interest in this fight. I look forward to how, perhaps, my experiences can extend beyond my own personal growth because of this blog.

Finally, and most importantly, I could never face a year like this alone, so all of you form a vital fellowship around me - providing what I will need to face the challenges of a year abroad.
